Helping Families Prepare for the Digital Challenges of Modern Life

Scott Wright is a cybersecurity and privacy professional, author, speaker, and educator who has spent decades helping individuals and organizations understand and manage digital risk.

Through the Digital Legacy Tree™ model, Scott helps people organize, protect, and communicate important digital information before it is needed by those they trust.

Scott has been an innovator in cybersecurity and privacy education, creating The Honey Stick Project and Click Armor, as well as co-hosting of hundreds of episodes of the Shared Security Podcast since 2009.

After completing an undergraduate degree in engineering at the University of Waterloo and a Masters in Business Administration at the University of Ottawa, Scott worked as a software product manager, bridging the security gaps between technology and humans.

Throughout my career in cybersecurity and privacy, I repeatedly encountered situations where important information was inaccessible when it was needed most. Families struggled to locate accounts, access devices, recover documents, preserve memories, or understand what digital assets even existed.

At the same time, our lives increasingly moved online. Email accounts, cloud storage, social media, digital subscriptions, online businesses, and digital assets became part of everyday life. Yet very few people had a practical way to organize this information for the people who might one day need it.

Digital Legacy Tree was created to help close that gap.

Security & Privacy

For over 2 decades, I worked with public and private sector organizations to analyze their technical security controls, as well as personal information and privacy policies.

Risk Management

Much of my career was spent helping organizations understand the online threats and vulnerabilities that put their information at risk, and how to manage what they could control.

Education & Speaking

For over 15 years, I have taught teams how to manage cybersecurity risks through the use of policies and technologies, and have appeared in media to explain impacts from security breaches.

Why This Matters

Most people have accumulated hundreds of digital accounts, devices, subscriptions, records, and personal memories. Without preparation, trusted family members may not know what exists, where important information is stored, or how to access it when circumstances require.

Digital legacy planning is not only about preparing for death. It is also about helping families navigate illness, injury, caregiving responsibilities, emergencies, and other life events where timely access to information can make a meaningful difference.

The book is only one part of the Digital Legacy Tree initiative. Through articles, tools, checklists, resources, and the Digital Legacy Network, my goal is to help individuals and families take practical steps toward greater preparedness and peace of mind

Why This Matters

Digital Legacy Tree reflects both my professional experience and my belief that technology should make life easier for the people we care about, not create additional challenges during difficult times.

My hope is that this framework helps families preserve what matters, reduce uncertainty, and become better prepared for whatever the future may bring.
